Interview with Macklemore about his new hit “Same Love”

Interviewer: Hey guys, welcome back to music and feelings, this month, “Same Love”, a song written by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, was chosen to be top 3 in the billboard top 100 charts for the 3rd month in a row. “Same Love” is known to have a deep message fighting for equal rights among races. Luckily, today we have a special guest, Macklemore, here to explain to us the true meaning of the song and its hidden meaning. Good Evening Macklemore, to start of, what inspired you to start writing your new hit track?

Macklemore: Well, I was driven by the issue of marriage equality, and the way society used the term “gay” was something that pissed me off. All I really wanted to do was to try to help others who were lost in what type of sex they found attractive and support and comfort everyone else who was trying to come out closet or felt like society is against them.

Interviewer: When you started your song, you used stereotypes. What role did the stereotypes have in the song.

Macklemore: Yeah I used these stereotypes to show that they don’t matter, when I said “ cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight”, some might say that for a young kid to have some of these characteristics they would be stereotypically gay, yet I talked about being “good at little league”, making the character “Ben” have an internal conflict. He started adding all his characteristics together to determine what kind of person he was, using stereotypes. But the important thing is that no matter what one does for fun, one could be the MVP at a superbowl yet be gay, and that’s alright.

Interviewer: How would you say “Same Love” addresses society and the way they perceive the term “gay”.

Macklemore: Society doesn’t open up or is inviting towards gay people, unfortunately, and neither does social media. Many people relate weird or uncommon actions to “gay”, or criticize videos by calling them gay, as said in the song, “ “Man, that’s gay”, gets dropped on the daily”. Being gay should not be an insult, and should not mean anything else or used in any way than it is. I’m straight, and I support gay rights, some would say I’m gay for supporting, and well that’s just completely wrong. The worst part is that people can’t say it face to face, but they use their phones as some kind of shield from the rest of the community, being pussies.

Interviewer: I agree with you hundred percent, yet no one probably cares about my opinion. Tell me, how does “Same Love” address the government and religion?

Macklemore: Well, the song already answers this question,
“The right-wing conservatives think it’s a decision
And you can be cured with some treatment and religion”.
But being gay is not something one can somehow just decide to change, and the government and religious people say that being gay is a “sickness”, but it isn’t. It’s just a different lifestyle choice, and is part of one’s identity, it shouldn’t be considered to be something morally wrong, especially not a sickness. Society causes enough trouble for gay people, as some are scared about being accepted, well the fact is that everyone should be accepted for being themselves. Religion considers being homosexual something unethical, yet religion is based on a thirty five hundred year book, and might need an update. And as I expressed in the song, “And “God loves all his children” is somehow forgotten”, religion acts like being gay is being a disgrace to god, even though being gay might not be natural, they still can’t take away god’s love from us for choosing something different of interest.

Interviewer: What hate are you referring to when saying “It’s the same hate that’s caused wars from religion”?

Macklemore: The reason why war starts are two reasons, one is greed, another is fighting the difference. All the religious wars that took place, some that we learnt in history class, where all because they couldn’t accept a difference. These wars caused lots of pain, and the hate causing them has decreased, yet this same hate towards a different race, lifestyle, or religion shouldn’t take away Human Rights.

Interviewer: How would you describe your last part of the song?

Macklemore: My last part of “Same Love” starts with “We press play, don’t press pause
Progress, march on!”, encouraging everyone that no matter the laws, or the uncommonness, we must do what we want, the way we want, with whom we want. In the song, a gay couple gets married at that point. This takes place at a time after the legalization of gay marriages.

Interviewer: Why did you and your group choose the title “Same Love” for your song?

Macklemore: In my last lines, I said that
“No law’s gonna change us
We have to change us
Whatever god you believe in
We come from the same one
Strip away the fear, underneath, it’s all the same love
About time that we raised up!”
I’m emphasizing on the fact that we must fight for change, and nonetheless, having the same god and being a human makes us all the same. The love straight couples and gay couples are the same, the pain of losing a loved one is the same, the happiness is the same, no matter one’s race, religion, or lifestyle, we are still carry emotions, a link thats makes us the same. And well love is what makes us humans, leading to the title “Same Love”.

Interviewer: Thank you Macklemore for this explicit interview, hopefully more success comes towards your music and your wantings for society.
